iTunes 'configuration data is corrupt'

How do I get rid of my version of iTunes on my desktop, Windows 10 machine. Can't update or uninstall. Tried new download. Error message is always the same, "Configuration Data is Corrupt" See you system operator (There is no such person, just me at home). The Apple site is hopeless, automatically assumes things and has no option to contact anyone at Apple to get help on this issue. Wants to go to my apple hardware (Phone and tablet) which has nothing to do with the issue.

Appreciate any assistance.

Hey rhinkie,

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Since the error you are receiving says the configuration data is corrupt, there are a few things you can try. We would want to see if this is specific to your user account or if this is a system-wide issue. You can create a new user account and try to remove iTunes from that new administrator account. If you cannot uninstall in either account, there may be some other software interfering and causing this to happen.

Visit the Microsoft website to learn how to create new user accounts for Windows 10, Windows 8, or Windows 7.

If you have the same issue in the new user account, skip to System-wide issues. If you don't experience the same issue, continue to User-specific issues.

  1. Check for potentially unwanted programs. Harmful software might prevent iTunes from opening or cause it to quit unexpectedly. Make sure that your security software is up-to-date and scan your system.
  2. Try adjusting your security software's settings. Learn more about how to resolve security software issues.
  3. Make sure that iTunes is installed correctly. An improper installation of iTunes can contribute to a variety of issues. Learn how to reinstall iTunes.

Greetings rhinkie,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It seems like you want to uninstall iTunes on your Windows 10 PC but you are receiving an error when you try to uninstall or update iTunes. I would recommend you read this article and use it to help troubleshoot the issue.

Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box (and the notes below) are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right-click on the setup file and run as administrator.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I appreciate the suggestion, but it is of no help. As I said in my post, the minute I try to uninstall iTunes, I am asked if that is really what I want to do, I say yes and then a box pops up saying that my "configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact your support person." That is me of course, which is why I am trying to get an answer from you all. The article you reference assumes that step 1, uninstalling iTunes is the place to start, but as you can see that can not be done given the error message.

So I still need help getting rid of iTunes so I can reinstall.

Allen A, thanks for the suggestions. Created new administrator account, but when trying to remove or download itunes same error message about corrupt data. The drivers are up to date.

I believe the actual iTunes software is corrupted as It would not update months back missing the "imsi64" or something like that message, so after spending way to many hours tracking that down I was directed to go into the program and drop out a line...something like that, its been months. So following that advice I probably am the one that corrupted the file. Doesn't matter who I sign in as. Can't get the dang thing off of the desktop. Defender is current. Any other suggestions?
