Change Apple ID

  1. I login to https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage.
  2. Click "Edit" under the Account section.
  3. Click Change Apple ID.
  4. Enter the new ID.
  5. Click the Continue button.

It just spins and does nothing. The Apple ID is never updated. Pretty sloppy, frustrating experience.

I just called Apple support. The agent said I could not change an Apple ID to an iCloud.com address.

  1. Apple apparently doesn't accept its own emails as IDs.
  2. The website makes no mention of the policy pertaining to point #1.
  3. The agent claims that any email I have received at the old verizon address will be sent to the iCloud address also, but that's false because I'm not receiving the replies to these community postings at anything other than the verizon address.

All-in-all, a pretty sloppy, amateurish design of a user experience.

OK, so you didn't state you were trying to change it to an Apple domain email address. And that is correct. You cannot change your Apple ID to or from an Apple domain address (@me, @mac, @iCloud.com).

Is the iCloud address you are looking to see mail for the iCloud account for the Verizon Apple ID? i.e., if the Verizon address is johnnyappleseed@verizon.com, is the iCloud ID johnnyappleseed@iCloud.com? Are you using the Apple Mail app? Where are you looking for your mail - iOS device or computer, or iCloud.com?

I didn't mention it because who figures Apple is going to lack the savvy to figure out how to accept its own emails for an Apple ID account!? That's one of the stupidest, most nonsensical things I've ever encountered! What should happen here is the interface (and I happen to be an interface designer by profession) should display all emails associated with an account, then I should be able to click and drag any one of those emails to the top of the list where it gets tagged as the primary. I should also have the means to remove any email address from the Apple ID account at any time, so long as at least one email is preserved to serve as the primary.

But yes, the iCloud address I'm expecting to see mail for is associated with the Verizon Apple ID, but nothing is being delivered from Apple to the iCloud address. For example, I would expect emails relating to this discussion to arrive at the iCloud address, but they only go to the soon-to-be-retired Verizon address. It makes no difference whether I use Apple mail, or log in to the iCloud website. They just aren't being delivered.
