icloud keeps asking password on mac

after turning on two-factor authentication from my iphone, mail on my mac (snow-leopard) constantly keeps asking for my (correct) password for icloud. I belong to those who have previously been on MobileMe & after 2012 have been migrated to icloud.

I have signed out & in again, as suggested, but to no avail. I have also deleted my icloud account from mail (preferences) but trying to add it again is met with the message: "logging in to the MobileMe IMAP has failed. make sure the user name & password are correct" etc.

how can I get back to my icloud on mail? it works fine on the browser & on my iphone 4S. please help!

Hi sofaklex!

I understand you're trying to use two-factor authentication on a Mac that has Snow Leopard installed, and I'm happy to help. You can use two-factor authentication on older software using these instructions:

What if I use two-factor authentication on a device running older software?

If you use two-factor authentication with devices running older OS versions, you might be asked to add your six-digit verification code to the end of your password when signing in. Get your verification code from a trusted device running iOS 9 and later or OS X El Capitan and later, or have it sent to your trusted phone number. Then type your password followed by the six-digit verification code directly into the password field.

Hi sofaklex!

Thank you for clarifying the issue further, and for trying our suggestion. Since you're using an earlier version of OS X, you must enter the email settings manually for iCloud. To do this, you must add it as an "Other" account when prompted. The settings for iCloud email can be found in this link:

Hi sofaklex!

Thank you for that follow-up question. To clarify, the steps we'd like you to complete are the following.

To add your iCloud email account:
  1. Open the Mail app
  2. Click Mail from the menu bar
  3. Click Preferences
  4. Click Accounts
You can add the account from there, and if you need further help from there, you can contact Apple using this link:

hi allen a - thank you for your advice. I had already tried this a few times, but it does not work for snow-leopard, as it does not feature icloud but mobileme. it seems that there is absolutely no way to reconnect to my icloud through mail, unless there is a hidden procedure which i do not know.
