Managed Apple ID and Find my iPhone

Many of the iPads at our school are enrolled with the Apple Managed ID. We are having issues with students losing their iPads and no longer being able to use the Find my iPhone feature. Without this feature it is incredibly difficult to help students find their misplaced iPads. Why is this off? Even as an administrator, I should be able to help the students in this situation. We also have JMFR MDM, but this doesn't help either. There is no way to obtain a GPS location or to send a sound signal to allow us to find iPads. Are there any work-arounds for this?

This is a problem even when one doesn't use Apple School Manager. We use Meraki's System Manager MDM with device enrolment, so we don't have AppleIDs associated with our devices. We're thus dependent upon Meraki's System Manager app running at all times on the iPads to allow us to track them. Meraki tracking is — to say the least — poor compared to Apple's Find My iPhone mechanism, and only works if the app is running. It's unfortunate that Apple have not opened up the Find My iPhone service to MDM suppliers and made it part of the DEP.

All that having been said, I was under the impression that, with Managed IDs, one could still locate lost devices and play sounds, but through the Apple School Manager system. Is that not correct?

Hi @ablnlc,

Apple designed Managed Apple IDs for educational institutions. Your school or district can use Apple IDs to log in to a Shared iPad and to access Apple services. These services include iCloud and iTunes U.

To maintain a focus on education, these services are disabled for Managed Apple IDs:

App Store purchasing

iTunes Store purchasing

HomeKit connected devices

Apple Pay

Find My iPhone

Find My Mac

Find My Friends

iCloud Mail

iCloud Keychain

FaceTime (this is off by default, but your institution can turn it on)

iMessage (this is off by default, but your institution can turn it on)

Note: Not all services are available in all countries or regions.

Please check this new iOS 10.3 and macOS 10.12.4 provide new ways to deploy your Apple devices. Using Apple School Manager (for education) or Apple Deployment Programmes (for business) with a mobile device management (MDM) solution gives you greater flexibility and control over your deployments.

All the best,

cheers Pablo
