If i have a file saved in iCloud Drive can I delete it from Garageband?

I started using iCloud Drive because I'm switching phone networks and my phone needs to be unlocked so I figured I should back everything up just to be safe. I've been using Garageband and wanted a way to store those files until I get my phone all sorted out. I tried to upload a file to the drive, which worked, but when I deleted the file from the garageband app it also disappeared from the drive. Am I not able to just have the file in the drive? Does anyone have any advice?

Hello vanniek,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you want to delete the songs in the GarageBand app on your iPhone, but keep the songs in the iCloud Drive. First, make sure all the songs you want to save are exported to iCloud Drive as GarageBand projects:

Export a song to iCloud Drive

  1. In the My Songs browser, touch and hold the song.

  2. Tap the Share button User uploaded file, then tap Add to iCloud Drive.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Send the song as a GarageBand project: Tap Project.

    • Send the song as an audio file: Tap Song.

  4. Tap the location where you want to save the song.

Then, go to Settings, tap your name at the top, tap iCloud and turn off GarageBand, and here is more about this process:

If you turn off iCloud for GarageBand, your songs stored in iCloud will be deleted from your device, but will remain stored in iCloud. If you want to turn off iCloud and keep your songs on your device, you will need to duplicate the songs you want to keep before you turn off iCloud.

Use iCloud with GarageBand - GarageBand for iPhone

Cheers!

Perhaps the issue here is that projects saved into iCloud automatically show up with a cloud link in the list of available projects. If you delete from that list then you're deleting the project. Once a GarageBand project is in the cloud your device should be able to clear a locally stored copy if the space is needed for other things. For security you can download the contents of the iCloud drive to a folder on a computer so it could be restored if needed. Ideally you want your device backed up to iCloud, iTunes, or if possible both.
