Shift Click and Command Click Suddenly Not Working in Finder

Hi

I'm currently building a master system image for deployment. I finished all the configuration and software installations, only to discover that Shift-Click and Cmd-Click are no longer working when selecting items/folders etc in Finder!

The cmd, shift and option keys all still work for things like keyboard shortcuts, but range and pick selection functionally with these keys in Finder is just plain broken.

If I turn off secondary mouse button (i.e. No right click) - Ctrl click will also not work either.

System is 10.10.5 with the latest 001 and 002 Yosemite security updates installed so latest build.

Started working from a completely clean install and have not touched any keyboard/modifier keys/custom short cut settings etc.

Have tried different keyboard/mouse/IO combinations.

Machine is a Late 2013 Mac Pro.

Has anybody encountered this issue? I cannot deploy the image with this bug and has wasted a huge amount of my time :(

Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Safe Mode - About El Capitan also Sierra

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

Should have probably mentioned originally that I had already tried a PRAM reset and also tested using another user account - neither solved the issue.

I have now booted the system into Safe Mode - Shift+Click working correctly again!

Rebooted the machine a few times normally with no peripherals attached, and still working okay.

Reattached a Thunderbolt dock and Shift+Click no longer working! Disconnect the dock, works again fine.

So that would point to an issue with Thunderbolt dock... however I then reconnected it to a different port, and everything worked fine.

I've now tried it in all the Thunderbolt ports and restarted a few times on each, and still working fine.

Could this have been a one time incident of a Thunderbolt driver playing up??

Id say it's a more serious issue but what do I know. Judging from the nuke it response above it's probably a "corruption" I'd "hdiutil imageinfo -verbose /dev/rdisk0s2" to your core storage volumes and the other volumes you find attached with diskutil list. Maybe set your nvram boot-args to "-x -s -v -no-zp=1 debug=0x14e" rreboot and look for errors maybe use our iPhone in slow mo to catch the everything bc I can't find a way to scroll up ever.

as far as I know there is a security update 3 and 4 fire Yosemite just the support download page is kinda neglected and not very user friendly or chronological.
