Ringer volume randomly going to maximum

iPhone 6

iOS 10.3.2

So it seems that over the past few months, the ringer volume on my iPhone 6 randomly goes to maximum at least a number of times per day. I'm assuming that this has been happening since I've updated to iOS 10.3. The default ringer volume in my settings is at around 30-40%.

Has anyone else been experiencing this? Or does anyone have a fix? It can be quite annoying (and sometimes quite jarring) to get a notification out of the blue at maximum volume.

Thank you.

Hello booman35,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that volume on your iPhone intermittently adjusts without being touched. I can surely see how receiving unexpectedly loud notifications could be very alarming. I'm happy to help.

If you haven't already, try restarting your iPhone. Restarting can resolve many unexpected behaviors.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issue persists follow the steps below:

  1. Unlock your device. Some buttons don't work from the Lock screen.
  2. Check for debris or dirt around the button or switch and clean with a soft cloth.
  3. Remove all protective films and cases that might interfere with the button or switch.
Get help with buttons and switches on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Please let us know if the behavior continues and any other steps you may have tried.

Have a great day!

Hello and thanks for responding.

I have already restarted my iPhone numerous times over the past little while to no effect. However, I did try it again after I saw your response. I also removed the protective case and cleaned up my phone, especially around the volume buttons, as much as possible. Unfortunately, the problem persists of the ringer volume constantly going to maximum.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you.

I've never seen this type of behavior before, but something you just said makes me curious. You mention a case and cleaning around the volume buttons. If you notice the phone volume multiple times a day, can you test the device with the case removed. It would appear to me that it could be the case causing the issue. If you are concerned about using the phone without the case, you could disable the volume buttons temporarily by going to Settings>Sounds & Haptics, then under Ringers and Alerts, where the button is for Change with Buttons, turn that off. That will disable the buttons for the volume and you would adjust the volume just above that. See what that does. It is not unusual at times that some cases can cause undue pressure on the volume buttons if there is a slight defect in the case.

I know that is probably a typo, since the latest iOS is 10.3.2. When you say you have reset the phone, are you describing the force restart? That is holding the sleep/wake and volume down buttons until you see the Apple logo and then release. That is the only type of reset there is on the phone. I would restore the phone, first from a backup, and if that does not help, then restore to factory, and test the device for a period of time without using a backup or adding any additional content to the device. If the device still exhibits the volume behavior, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store to have the device checked. It could very well be a hardware issue.

I have not removed my case (Otter Box) but I did disable the buttons as you suggested. So far, over the last few days, it seems to be working. I'm not sure what changed a few months ago however (I've had the same protective case since I bought my phone) and I never had to alter that particular setting before... Regardless, thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully it continues to work.

If you have the button settings to Off, then it will continue to work. Cases wear after time, and I can tell you that I've experienced problems with them in the past. One of my Otterbox cases began to switch the Mute button On and Off at random, so I had to remove the case, then replace it with another. Removing the case identified that it was the problem, and after replacement did not experience another issue. Given the flexible nature of the cases, it isn't that unusual. Good luck.
