Time Machine external hard drive stolen

I recently had my external hard drive stolen. I am concerned because I had a time machine back up for my entire computer with all of my data saved onto the hard drive. Does the person have access to that data? Or do they need my Apple username and password to restore the time machine data on another mac?

Thank you.

Did you encrypt the backup?

Encryption is not the default Time Machine state, so it is likely that the person can read, write and copy all the contents of the backup. They don't have to restore to read data.

I suggest you think about what security critical data may be on that disk & start resetting passwords etc.

Your keychain is used to store passwords - that is encrypted with the user account password. How secure was your login password? If that could be guessed or was a common word you have to update & secure your accounts.
