Tiny system font size disaster

Help, my system font has become tiny and is far too small for my work. I can now only work properly with a large external monitor attached. (I'm running El Capitan on 15” non-retina mid 2012 MacBook Pro).

This problem started yesterday. I had a very minor problem in that Pages does not always start the first time. Somebody recommended checking whether there were damaged fonts in Font Book. I did that and found many cases where common fonts were shown as being duplicated, which the system allowed me to correct automatically.

I don’t know what was actually done automatically and cannot find anything in the trash, but since doing this the system font has become tiny.

I have compared the following 3 locations on the hard drive with the same locations on my external boot drive. (I clone my entire drive weekly using SuperDuper to an external drive for emergencies). The number of font files is identical in each case.

~/Library/Fonts/

/Library/Fonts/

/System/Library/Fonts/

How can I get my system font size back again please or reverse the corrections which the OS made to Font Book?

Might it be sufficient to replace the newly written fontbook.plist?

Does anybody know a solution please? This is a disaster for me and a huge set back if it cannot be solved. Thanks!

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 16 GB RAM

As per this article : Font Book for Mac: Remove or disable fonts

Fonts you remove won’t be available in Font Book or in the Fonts window. If you don’t want to remove a font from your Mac, you can disable it. Disabled fonts remain on your Mac, but aren’t listed in apps or in the Fonts window.

Remove fonts

Fonts you remove are moved to the Trash and aren’t available in Font Book or in the Fonts window.

In Font Book, select one or more fonts, press the Delete key, then click Remove.

Disable fonts

  1. In Font Book, select one or more fonts or font families.
  2. Select User uploaded file above the list of fonts, then click Disable. To disable or enable a collection, choose the command from the Edit menu.Disabled fonts are dimmed and labeled “Off.”

You can’t remove or disable system fonts. When you select a system font, both User uploaded file and the Disable command in the Edit menu are dimmed.

And , I am not confusing the OP or anyone , if OP wishes can confirm in Apple support through chat or on phone .

An article : Font Book for Mac: Validate fonts in Font Book

Open font book via spotlight , select All fonts ( command + A ) , take cursor on top menu bar File > click on validate fonts .

User uploaded file

The fonts will start validating , and the bar will start loading , after completion if yellow exclamation marks appears in front of

the font , select the duplicate font and click on remove , select the duplicate font and do not remove in a combined way ( just to be on safer side ) .

User uploaded file

In the end open font book preferences > check the box of resolve duplicates by moving files to the trash .

User uploaded file

A Simple fact : Duplicate fonts is one of the reason that Mac book gets heated from Bottom .

Well, as mentioned, merely by following Kurt's advice and holding the Shift key when starting, the FontBook was reset and everything is back to it’s original state again, so work is back to normal.

I have learned in the process that Time Machine would have been overly complex or even useless in reverting the stupid changes which El Capitan took the liberty to make after I had selected 'Yes, OS, correct the faults automatically'. I will be transitioning away from Time Machine and build on my arsenal of other back other methods.

Most importantly, I have discovered how font management can affect seriously the functionality of the Mac. I had never even used FontBook before!

During validation of the fonts, I discover only one has serious error; MT extra.

User uploaded file

Clearly, this needs to be attended to first.

481 fonts passed (Kurt will be shuddering that I have so many, which I too am certain are unnecessary) and 49 fonts have minor problems. One of them is Tahoma:

User uploaded file

And Tahoma bold:

User uploaded file

These will be my second priority as they are used in a critical app.

Once I manage to digest the available information on the best way to solve these, I can progress. Thanks again for the help so far.

Jun 2, 2017 11:06 AM in response to Kurt Lang

1. I got the OS on a USB and tried to installed Tahoma Bold using Pacifist, but it got stuck.

2. The MT Extra mistakes are shown below and I think this should have priority, being the only font flagged red.

User uploaded file

Kurt, do you suggest that I just trash MT Extra from within the FontBook app?

I remember that a previous OS had a test version of MS Office for Mac (which I think I looked at) but uninstalled again. That was probably the original source of these 2 fonts. Going forward though, I did see that I have the following Tahoma fonts:

Normal (flagged as duplicate) /library/fonts/tahoma.ttf

Regular /users/username/library/fonts/tahoma (without extension)

Bold /users/username/library/fonts/tahoma (without extension)

Negreta (flagged as duplicate) /library/fonts/tahoma bold.ttf

Thanks

Jun 3, 2017 2:36 AM in response to Kurt Lang

Thanks, trashing MT Extra was no problem.

This is what I see with Tahoma however:

User uploaded file

TypeBook flags the older versions without extensions as being the good ones. If I click through to individually manually correct these files, it shows me the .ttf version in Finder.

I want to get it right because this font is used in a critical app and letting FontBook automatically correct this error, as advised by somebody else, was what caused the initial mess. I can naturally find the old fonts in the Finder and delete them from there, but is that the best way? They are both located in /users/username/library/fonts

It appears from this (and probably also applicable to the remaining 43 problems) that the OS does not properly remove fonts by trashing the apps which installed them.

You are running AV software(ESET Cyber Security Application) which is neither needed or recommended on Mac OS. You should uninstall that as per the developers instructions. It will do you no good and could cause a lot of harm to your system.

Your Configuration files have been modified. Do you know why you did this?

Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file

Also, your Security & Privacy settings in System Preferences are set to "Anywhere". This is dangerous and advise you change that to "App Store and Identified Developers"

I don't know that any of this will change the system font issue but it can only improve the performance of your system.

>You are running AV software(ESET Cyber Security Application) which is neither needed or recommended on Mac OS. It will do you no good and could cause a lot of harm to your system.

I have read that but did not think that it could cause harm. As I run Windows under Parallels I thought it a good idea to catch problems on the Mac.

>Your Configuration files have been modified. Do you know why you did this?

Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file

I was unaware of that. Where did you see it so that I can delve a little deeper?

That is easily done, thanks.

How about this solution found recommended in OSX Daily?

As per this article : Mac OS X: Font locations and their purposes - Apple Support

"Local"/Library/Fonts/

Any local user of the computer can use fonts installed in this folder. Mac OS X does not require these additional fonts for system operation. An admin user can modify the contents of this folder. This is the recommended location for fonts that are shared among applications.

And :

"System"/System/Library/Fonts/Mac OS X requires fonts in this folder for system use and displays. They should not be manually altered or removed.

If the duplicate fonts are created , we have to manually check and remove these fonts with exclamation marks without extensions .

And , regarding heating of the system duplicate fonts create an issue , as I have experiences , took my system to the apple authorised service centre , they did a clean installation , no dust was found in the system , still the system was heated from bottom end .

So , contacted in Apple Support a senior advisor suggested this method and they clearly explained the consequences of duplicate fonts ( and they have tools to find out the quick answers ) and asked about any article , and said some articles are not shared that are for their internal use .

Yes, if it comes to that, but then I would prefer to do it on a file by file or folder by folder basis IF possible. Otherwise I would lose a lot of work.

Usually the clone is made Saturdays. However, I was travelling from Weds - Mon, so the last clone is from Tues 16 May.

So preferably I am looking for the magic "backwards" switch. I forgot to mention it but I also have a Time Machine backup from Fri 26 May before the changes were made. When I opened Time Machine with the right time stamp it showed probably 10 apparently identical Finder windows stacked above each other. That's where I got lost. I pressed the restore button but it didn't improve the situation so perhaps I did it incorrectly.

In the "modern" operating systems of the mac, you can not change the system font to another font at all. There were some hacks to do it in Yosemite and ElCapitan, but they caused issues and did not work well. The system font is thin and low contrast (this is the "modern" graphics), the only thing you can do is in the settings, and eventually in the system font size by changing the resolution....

The number of files in each of the 3 font folders is unchanged between the current status and that on my last clone (16 May) so I imagine that the files are unchanged too, which is puzzling because Font Book no longer shows duplicate fonts. However, by inspecting the Console entries, I saw that fontbook.plist was changed. I don't want to heighten the problem, but would restoring the 16 May version of fontbook.plist be enough to solve the problem? I could post the content here if useful.

I'm not sure because as Lexipex says you really cannot change the system font. I doubt that the .plist would change anything either. Yet, it is odd that it changed. (Could you have stumbled on a new way to hack the system font?)You could try and revert back if there were problems but that's your call.

It might not be a bad idea to post an Etrecheck report. EtreCheck was created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.
