confused about icloud photo library and icloud backup of photos

i have a large icloud photo library. it's 179.3 GB currently, the majority of which is photos (71,000). And some videos (1,000). i have a 256gb iphone 7 plus. i have icloud photo library turned on. everything is in the cloud when i go to icloud's website photos section. on my iphone i have a large music library of 115 GB. i have itunes match but i have everything downloaded to the phone. so i am not able to save locally all of my photos, videos and music because it would require 294 GB and that's not even including other apps or system software. so i have the optimize storage turned on in photo settings. but the phone, after literally months, has not been able to load all of the optimized versions and thumbnails by thousands. they also have not been able to load fully on my ipad over the same period - so the problem persists on not one but two devices. my phone currently has 38 GB of storage available so space is not an issue. i noticed recently that my last icloud backup was a massive 45.57 GB. in the icloud backup settings i see that photo library is turned on and it takes up 42 GB of the icloud backup.

my questions are:

can i turn this off so my icloud backup will only be 3-4 GB?

will doing that remove the photos from my icloud photo library? it says it will remove them from icloud, and icloud photo library is part of icloud..so.... will I be deleting these files from my 179.3 GB library? i don't want to do that

i'm also not clear of what is making up the 42 GB of photos in the icloud back of of photos... are those the optimized versions that have been downloaded to my phone? so will this grow as my phone (hopefully) downloads the rest of the thumbnails and optimized versions?

also my years view in photos has never fully expanded and loaded thumbails and full years are all the same size block which is odd to me because the amount photos per year varies by thousands

again, turned on icloud photo library on my phone and i pad months ago and everything still has not loaded

none of this is clear to me and is confusing af

I have my photos backed up elsewhere so i really do not need them backed up to icloud...and i'm wondering if such a massive continual back up of them might be what is causing my phone and ipad to never fully download all the thumbails and optimized versions

i just want to make sure that by turning off the photos in the icloud back up options i'm not going to be deleting my photos in the cloud that i'll have to re-upload (which was a huuuuuuge pain when i first migrated my large library into there... took forever and icloud's website kept crashing)

anyway sorry to ramble and thank you to the experts out there who can shed some light on this, i really appreciate it!

here is a screen shot. the number is even lower now. and i've also put a screen shot of what my years view looks like. see the size of the block for 2007? all the years are the exact same size, unless they had less photos than that. and look at all the gray boxes where thumbnails should be. it has looked this way for months

thank you, could you please shed some light on the other concerns I raised? specifically, why it is taking my phone and ipad such a long period of time to load all of the optimized photos into the photos app on two separate brand new devices which have plenty of space? the status in settings - photos will often say it is uploading tens of thousands of photos, but they are already in the cloud and not on the devices and need to be downloaded not uploaded

eric, the first link you shared is how to back up your iphone but i didn't need help with that and it makes no mention of photos whatsoever, so i'm not sure why you sent that to this thread

in the second link you shared, about icloud backups, which was relevant to my post, it says "iCloud backups include nearly all data and settings stored on your device. iCloud backups don't include: Data that's already stored in iCloud, like Contacts, Calendars, Notes, My Photo Stream, and iCloud Photo Library"

every photo on my phone has come from my icloud photo library. so what is making up the 42 GB of photos in my icloud backup? all of those are already in icloud photo library, so the page you sent says the backup should not be containing those.

please clarify, thanks

You are welcome. From the first link:

iCloud backups include nearly all data and settings stored on your device. iCloud backups don't include:

Data that's already stored in iCloud, like Contacts, Calendars, Notes, My Photo Stream, and iCloud Photo Library.

Does Photos show any uploading/downloading in progress? If not, try Settings/iCloud and slide off syncing. Wait a few minutes and then resync. Others with large photo libraries have posted it took a month for everything to sync. Has the device been on the entire time?

Have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?

Where are you seeing that photos is taking up 42 GB of your backup?

thank you, i appreciate it eric.

in settings - photos - it says it is currently uploading 47,063 items but it seems static.

i would report on what it says on the ipad but i decided to do a full reset to see if it will fix this issue and it's currently undergoing the restore from its cloud backup completed this morning

i was really hoping not to have to do that and re-download the entire music collection, but i'm just so tired on this

if it works i'm planning to do the same with my iphone just to be done with this once and for all

i'm not sure what you mean when you said try settings/icloud and slide off syncing because there is no such option on the settings/icloud page.

now it is at 45,009 as items left to upload, but as i said earlier, have witnessed it re-uploading counts up to 70,000 and watched them go down to zero time and time and time again. do any experts besides eric have any thoughts to add to these strange and annoying issues i'm experiencing with what's supposed to be a seamless system?

May 27, 2017 12:03 PM in response to mooofy

i counted the amount of tiny thumbnails in the years view and per year it is 24 rows and 32 columns, or 768 thumbnails...i have about 71,000 photos and videos in the library...the recent years should each have 5-6k photos... so why is it showing such a small number of them and why is each year maxed out at only 768 thumbnails?
