Take the advice you have been offered - Apple stores will give you a free consultation - if you are lucky they can test your device & possibly tell you what appears to be wrong.

If a repair is required they will tell you if you have any warranty or they will give you a quote for the work/ cost to trade in and exchange etc.

If you go to a third party store (one not run by Apple) then you may need to pay for a consult or ask for a quote. They may also be able to help you check you are not making a simple mistake.

Have you ever had this device repaired? Third party repairs can disable Touch ID.

My finger print button went faulty it was repair free & iphone was out of warranty

Contact Support.apple.com They can test finger pint read over your wifi

They may send you a post paid box to return iPhone for repair.

Mine only took 4 days use SIMCARD in other phone if you have one.
