When I try to update my iPhone 7 Plus through iTunes on my iMac, I get this message -- There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. An unknown error occurred (4037).
I'm running Sierra 10.12.3 on my iMac and iTunes 12.6.1 (the latest version). Does anyone know what this error means? Do I need to update Sierra first? Thanks.

I haven't tried it since May. Apple Support article was no help. I haven't updated my computer yet but I doubt that will fix the problem. After I update iMac, I'll give it another try. Or I will just try to update directly from iPhone. I'm squeamish about updating my iMac right now because that is working fine. I have a late 2014 27 inch 5K iMac. I wish I knew what that error really means.

I sorted this error by:
1. setting up my new iphone 7 as a 'new phone' rather that trying to restore the settings from my old phone back up on iTunes.
2.update to the latest software from within its own settings app.
3. connect the new phone to iTunes and restore from the last backup on the computer
Thanks for your input. I finally updated my iMac to 10.12.5. After that, I tried to update iPhone thru iTunes again. Still no luck. So I installed the update directly through iPhone. Now everything is up to date and working fine.
This worked for me.
I figured the error was because I updated the firmware on my old phone right before I backed up and tried to restore, and my new iPhone 7 still had the older version.
So I set up my new phone as a 'new phone', then updated to the latest firmware, and then restored from backup.
Worked like a charm.
