What does circle with slash mean?

I have just upgraded to Sierra and one of the applications in Applications folders has a gray circle with slash imposed overtop of it. I assume this means that it's obsolete and won't run. However, it ALSO does not allow me to delete it by moving to trashcan. So what is "special about the icon? And how do you get rid of it? The app is VMFusion 3.1..woefully old.

Just to close this question out entirely, I did fix my problem. The circle with slash assurable meant that it had an app being identified, but macOS couldn't find it (at least not the right PART of it). I later found a VMFusion description on how to completely remove it. Turns out there were still some files (and executables) of VMFusion still on the disk, so it "thought" it was there when in fact it wasn't. I was able to remove all of the files associated with VMFusion (there were 2 accounts that had files in them, so I had to log in to each and remove the files), then shutdown and then reboot. Voila, the circle with slash disappeared. Moral of the story: don't ASSUME that just putting an App in the trash will work. Check first if there is an Uninstall procedure to use. In this case, I still would not have been able to RUN the Uninstall VMFusion procedure (since VMFusion 3 does NOT run under macOS Sierra); I still would have had to remove it manually using the recommended (and documented) VMFusion uninstall procedure located on the VMFusion website.

I may eventually reinstall a CURRENT version of VMFusion (it was good software!), I just don't currently have a need for it, and the old version did not work any longer because I upgraded to macOS Sierra.

Well, I tried starting in Safe mode, that did not work. I tried next to start in Recovery mode via Disk Utility, that also did not work. I then restarted it normally, again tried to move the VMFusion icon with circle & slash to Trash, this still didn't work. In desperation, I tried opening Applications in Finder app, located the VMFusion icon, and dragged it to Trash....this worked! I then emptied Trash, and now after rebooting it is gone and everything appears normal (for now). I'm not sure why it worked in Finder app but not directly from the App folder on the Dock. Perhaps you know. In any case, thank you for your help.
