iphone 7 plus overheating wont charge

So I got my phone I believe sometime around February or march and every few weeks it does this thing where it won't charge and I have to restart it about 2 or 3 times. Now this time I fell asleep playing a game. When I woke up it was so hot I couldn't believe it. I took my phone case off and turned it off I let it cool down then turned it back on. It had only been charged to 50%. As soon as I turn it back on and plug it in it gets hot again. So I had an update so I did that. During the update it was plugged in and still hot. When it was done I turned it off again letting it cook down and then turned it back on. I have to repeat this process 3 or 4 times before it will stop getting hot and will charge. I do not understand what the issue is here.

Apple advises that it can be normal for your iPhone to become warm when using it and also in other situations including when charging it, first setting it up, restoring from a backup and when apps re-index or re-analyse data after a software update. The exterior acts as a cooling surface, transferring heat from inside the iPhone to cooler air outside.

Apple also notes that charging your iPhone when it is inside certain styles of case may generate excess heat, which can affect battery capacity. If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when you charge it, Apple advises that you should remove it from its case before charging.

In respect of the charging issue, follow the steps here, including checking the charging port for any lint or other debris:

Also ensure that you are using either a genuine Apple cable or an Apple-certified / MFi cable. If you are already doing so, try instead using another such cable. Apple also recommends using genuine Apple USB Power Adapters.
