Install MacOs Sierra on SD card

I have just downloaded MacOS Sierra on to an SD Card to use as a back up and the system is now inviting me to restart in order to install. Is this really necessary as I don't want to use the SD Card at the moment? I just want to keep it as a back up in case I have any problems starting my computer in the future.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Just to clarify, if you want to be able to boot from the SD card you will have to create a bootable installer.

A restart is required to effect the installation. If you don't restart, all you will have is the installer app itself. You can install macOS at any time.
