iMac late 2012 blue stripes screen

Today my iMac suddenly showed some vertical blue stripes .. Which was the same a few times I switched off and on the computer. But, after 10 minutes or so, the screen returned to normal. What would the cause be and what are the things I need to do to ensure the blue stripes screen don't appear again?

This could be the GPU getting ready to fail or it could be a software glitch. Please follow the directions below so we can look for any obvious issues.
