email virus/malware in Mail

Hi

I recently opened an email attachment from 'myself' (they used my own address to send me the email - I know I know I should've known better) but I often email myself attachments to use on my other machine. Since then I'm inundated with spam and borderline **** emails that - even if I mark as Junk - still get through to my Inbox. AVG antivirus also brings up virus warnings for a lot of the spam emails that come through. Will reformatting my machine and reloading everything again manually (not using a Time Machine backup) help? Would there be some way to import all my mail and mailboxes without bringing in the infection again? Super frustrated with having to wade through crap everyday so willing to do something extreme.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

In a effort to build out the information in this post.

The email is a business account, the business email account is the one receiving all of the spam and this account with others are used in on the mac - mac mail.

Enclosed are a couple of links, one pertains to apple mail reporting spam....(but it may be @Me @Icloud @Mac specific)

the other is how to set up rules in mac mail, this allows you to force emails into a particular location and a wikihow on how to unsubscribe from spam

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204759

https://www.howtogeek.com/244679/how-to-set-up-rules-in-apple-mail/

http://www.wikihow.com/Unsubscribe-from-Spam

I do not know if these articles will help you, but we have added information for people to help you.

P.S. Something to think about...does the business email account have a "email" team that can help you, resolve the business email address. Eg: XXXXXXXXXXX@COMPANYNAME.COM

You have several issues that need to be addressed:

1 - you are dangerously low on free space on your boot drive. It's generally recommended to maintain a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space for optimum system and application performance. More if you can do so. If you don't you could possible get in a situation where you download nearly the entire amount with a new file (update/upgrade or whatever) and cause your Mac to lock up and not be able to reboot.

2 - you have adware installed and should remove it. You can rerun Etrecheck and click on the [Remove/Report] button to remove it or download and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac. It was developed by one of the top and most respected contributors here in the ASC. Don't use bittorrent to download files. Sites associated with it as more likely to include adware and malware with the downloads.

3 - you have 6 orphan files in the Clean Up section of the report. Remove them with the [Clean up] button in the Etrecheck report.

4 - boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, to clear cache and temp files and run maintenance scripts during the boot. I'm an advocate of rebooting each day (not necessarily Safe Mode) to keep those cache and temp files cleared out.

The first step in diagnosing an ailing Mac is to uninstall any and all non-Apple "anti-virus" junk. Until you do, you won't be able to get to Step 1. Get rid of "AVG". As long as it remains installed it is unreasonable to expect your Mac to work properly.

Step 0 is to create a backup. To learn how to use Time Machine please read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

Im certain, that you will receive some reply's from Mac Experts that visit the form.

Being a mac and windows user I do the same things at times.

The one question, I would have aligns around the "spam emails"

is the root email account that you are experiencing problems with Spam

is it iCloud, is it google or other......

* Trying to identify the email and computer

Is it a Apple Email / Apple Machine

Is it a Apple Email / Windows Machine

* Can you build a new email account....

I believe the issue may be email related not apple.

The more information you share usually helps you get feed back.

Thanks for the help!

My email is my business mail - so not mac/cloud-specific email. I've had the email address for almost 8 years so would hate to have to change it - all the contacts would have to change their details for me too! I have a number of other email address - the accounts are all used on Apple Mail too - and I don't get near the same amount of spam. I also download the mail on my iphone sometimes - and again it's just that account that gets the spam and not the others - all of which are also setup non-cloud, non-google accounts.

Maybe the Zip I opened just added that address to a spamming machine that just sends stuff and the only way to do away with it is delete the account and let me clients know I have a new address? AVG is continuously finding malware/virus emails coming through on the same account.
