New Shuffle WILL NOT play into iHome AT ALL. Apple could care less...

After a week of frustration, I am ready to set fire to my new iPod "Shuffle." Apparently, Apple redesigned the "Shuffle" in such a way that it will not transmit into any product with a docking port-- such as the many, many iHome items on the market. Basically, my "Shuffle" works fine-- but it's not compatible with anything that says it will work with a "Shuffle." When I finally determined that the iHome player that I got for Christmas was not defective, I called Apple to see if they had arrived at any solutions to the situation created by their brilliant redesign. The response from Apple (John Myers, Customer "Care") was too bad, so sad. Apple will not bear any responsibilty for a change that makes their product unusable with all other "third party" products. After all, why should Apple make any effort to keep their cusotmers satisfied? It's not like they KNEW their players would be plugged into systems in order to be heard beyond the earbuds. I am very, very disappointed in Apple. All they seemed wanted to do is blame iHome, not offer any help at all to their customers.

And YOU couldn't figure out HOW to use a patch cable between the Shuffle's headphone output jack and the audio-in jack on an iHome product? Way to go...

Wake up and smell the coffee.

You have a third-party, non-Apple add-on system which isn't even designed to be compatible with the earlier version of the iPod Shuffle, and find (to your shock and dismay) that it won't work with the current version. The version which, among other changes, has a fundamentally different way of connecting to the outside world. And this is a surprise — why?

I'm trying to visualize the setup: A docked iPod Shuffle with the USB cord plugged into a Dock Adapter, and that whole mess balanced on top of an iHome.

Tell you what, sell your Shuffle while it still has some residual value to someone else, then go get yourself a 1G model. You can play that on your iHome, you'll be happier, and we won't have to waste any more time on silly questions like this. Or wait a month or two and some smart German guy will find a way around the problem. Apple won't — it's not their problem.

Or no .... your idea is better. Just set fire to it. That'll teach 'em not to mess around with you, all right.

According to Apple Tech Support this will not work
with the new generation "Shuffle"

You actually DISCUSSED using the audio-input for audio ONLY connection OR did you discuss using it to play through AND charge the Shuffle?

Audio-in will work fine for playing Shuffle through iHome...HOWEVER, the INTENT of IHome products is to provide an integrated system with an iPod as the storage, management and source component of music, including charging the iPod (ONLY thorough an Apple iPod Dock connector, excluding 2nd Gen Shuffle).

You're right, I didn't specifically ask about the patch. I merely asked how to play my new iPod through the iHome and was told that it could not be done (both by iHome and by Apple). After your suggestion, I contacted another person at iHome and asked about the patch. They said that it "might" work. I don't care if it charges and plays at the same time. Thanks for your help (by the way, the iHome manual does not address this at all!).

Well, did further checking and the iHome that was given to me for Christmas is the worst possible for my situation. It is the iH36 Under Cabinet Kitchen System-- and it has no Audio Intake location (which, I suppose, is why there was no patch cord!). According to Best Buy techs, there is no way to rig this with this model (one of several, apparently). So, while your suggestion was the best I had, it's a no-go as well. Any other bright ideas?

An FM transmitter? Check out Belkin's Tune Cast I or Tune Cast II at http://store.apple.com burns through batteries, though.
