Ah, I'm afraid I don't have access to a classic at the moment. The image was liberated from the Internet at large. See Corrupt iPod Classic. Take a look at the HDD stats. Assuming they're not appalling try the DFU restore method.

Ok, thanks, that's what mine looks like - the problem is it will not stay connected to iTunes. I plug it in - the screen says "connected" for about five seconds and then I get the OK to disconnect message. How can I change the disk mode so that it stays connected?
Disk mode is really intended for moving data to or from the device with Finder or Windows Explorer. iTunes may think it is supposed to ignore it. If you reboot the device can you access it in iTunes as normal? Is there data on the device you need to recover?

Rebooting the device does not allow me to access it in iTunes as normal because it ejects just seconds after connection. I have no data to recover. The situation does not allow me to sync the iPod to iTunes. I have tried three different cords (all in good shape) and two different usb ports - the same result each time. Since you have the same message on your disk mode screen does your iPod still connect correctly to iTunes?
