I updated my profile -- thanks. I also updated to 10.12.5, but problem immediately re-occurred. Only happens when I sit down in front of a black screen (seemingly a logoff has occurred), right -click, and the error msg displays on the black screen. If I do nothing then, after 30 seconds or so it goes ahead and displays the logon screen. Guess I'll have to call Apple support. Here's a photo:
When I set up the profile, Yosemite was the only choice. I was Sierra 10.12.4. I thought I was notified when a new release came out but when I checked, 10.12.5 was available. I updated and will see if that solves the problem. Thanks, and I'll report back later.
All I know is that Mail used to do that for me also, on all my Macs. At some point a Sierra update fixed it. I do not recall if it was the current release or an earlier one. I always assumed it was due to one of the many Mail Rules I use, some of which invoke AppleScript routines. If you do any of that consider that possibility, but I didn't change anything and the problem no longer exists.

Thanks, Viking. That seems logical. But I've had all my email accounts (iCloud, Outlook, ATT.net, and Exchange) set up for over two years. This problem just began a couple months ago. Maybe one of them -- or Apple -- changed something that is causing this. Guess it's not a big deal.
Update macOS to the latest release. Your profile information (Yosemite) is probably inaccurate.
You posted a screen shot and wrote sitting in front of black screen , the system shows safari is crashing , in my opinion a clean reinstallation for Mac OS Sierra .
Mail may have one or more active network connections open to remote mail servers, and these need to either timeout, or be slammed down by this overriding dialog.
