Apple TV halts playback at 30 seconds

I have a 2nd gen Apple TV that was working fine until a week ago. Now whatever I play, Netflix, Hulu, purchased items through iTunes, it all stops after playing for a few seconds and goes back to the description screen.

I have tried restarting the Apple TV, restarting my modem, switching from wifi to wired ethernet, checking for updates, nothing has helped. Any ideas before I toss it and buy a new one?

Thanks,

Christine

Test it in another location to eliminate your network as a location, if the problem persists...

Try the following steps for the Apple TV 2 & 3, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

  1. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
  2. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
  3. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
  4. Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
  5. Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

Well, I got stuck on step #4. My AppleTV remote has been broken, (it will work for a second after replacing the battery, then will fail) so I had programmed a universal remote to run the AppleTV. Doing the reset wiped this, so I cannot control the AppleTV anymore.

Tried using the AppleTV Remote app on my iphone, but to pair it, it wants me to enter a code on the AppleTV, which I can't do of course, because no remote! Now I am really stuck.
