Required Java version for Bonjour

A Max4Live device (Livegrabber GrabberSender) tells me:
"Warning: Java not found on this system. Bonjour will not work."
I have Java 8 built 131 installed. Using Ableton Live 9.7.2, mac OS 10.12.1.

I think the error message popped up after I deinstalled an old Java version (SE 6 runtime?) and installed Java 8, but I'm not sure.

Does Bonjour requires a special legacy version of Java?

As Luis stated, Bonjour doesn't use java.

Java 8 from java.com is only a web applet, so a normal java app will not be able to access it. You may be able to trick java apps to use it by pointing JAVA_HOME to the internet plug-in package, or you need a Java Development Kit (JDK). You can only download that from the Oracle website, not Java.com. The legacy Java 6 had both JRE and JDK.
