iPod Touch(4th Gen) asking for Recovery Code

I have a iPod Touch (4th Gen) that stopped backing up to iCloud a little over a month ago. I received a popup notification stating I should check my iCloud Account settings after I signed in with my Apple ID and password. Thinking that I had not updated the password for my Apple ID on my iPod, I updated it and then received a notification asking for a Recovery Code. Below the area where I was to place the recovery code, there was a statement said the Recovery Code was provided when I set up the two Step Authorization process. If a code was supplied, there was no notification stating that I needed to keep this code for later use.

I would appreciate any assistance you can provide

OK, that's great to hear! I think it was asking for the Recovery Key because it thought you didn't know your password and that you didn't have a verification code.

You should go immediately to: Apple - My Apple ID, and in the Security section, click Edit, then Replace Lost Key to get a new Recovery Key. Cut and paste it, or write it down, and store it in a secure place. If you ever are in a situation where you have neither your password nor can you get a verification code, you are going to need that Recovery Key. If you don't have one in that situation, you will permanently lose access to your Apple ID.

Sorry, but there was:

Two-step verification for Apple ID - Apple Support

Not sure why it is asking for your Recovery Key, however. When you are using Two-Step, you are sent a Verification Code. You only need a Recovery Key if you have forgotten your password and you are not able to get a verification code to change it.

Can you provide more information as to how you got to the place where you are being asked for your recovery key? What screen are you on that it is asking for that?

Hi Darrell,

Well, I'm totally confused then. A Recovery Key is something that is created when Two-Step Verification is set up. However, you are indicating that Two-Factor Authentication is what you are using, and Two-Factor does not use a Recovery Key, so I'm not sure what you ran into earlier.

Two-Factor Authentication is the most current form of layered security that Apple is using. Two-Step is the older version. But, again, two factor does not use a Recovery Key. It does use "Account Recovery" if you forget your passcode and do not have access to a trusted device, but does not use a Recovery Key.

Here's are some links to Two-Factor support articles that may help explain some aspects of it:

Gail,

Thank you for responding to my issue yesterday. I retraced my steps to try in an attempt to recreate my issue. 1) I selected iCloud from my iPod's Settings, it asked me to me provide the password to my Apple ID account, which I filled in. and on my ldesktop computer, I received a notification that an Apple ID was used on a new device, which I confirmed and it supplied a confirmation code for me to use (when I do not know). 2)I From iCloud Settings, I selected my Apple ID login, which showed the Account Screen. The Password field was blank, so I inserted the password. 3) After selecting DONE, I received a notification screen asking for the Recovery Key which started wit a RF, I think. Since I did not know what to input, I selected CANCEL and started over.

I performed Step 1 again, and I again received a confirmation code. I performed Step 2, but this time I inserted the password followed by the confirmation code and it DONE. This time I did not receive a notification screen requesting a RecoveryKey, but I did receive another confirmation code, which I inserted into the spaces provided the iPod screen. I am pretty sure I got everything the way it happened but you would know better than me. When I did not receive the Recovery Key notification I did go back to the iCloud Account windward the password field was still populated, unlike when I cancelled the Recovery Key window, the password field went blank.

My back uptown the iCloud is now working also. I manually backed up to iCloud, where I did not have that option on the iPodduring the time encountered my problem.

I think everything seems too working now, unless you have questions.

Thanks,

Darrell

Gail,

Sorry it is Darrell again. I went to the My Apple ID account to retrieve a new Recovery Key but was unable to locate"Replace Lost Key". I located the Security section, selected EDIT and saw the following options: "App Specific Passwords", "Trusted Phone Numbers", "Notification Emails"and "Two-Factor Authentication ON". Would it be listed under another option? Each option had brief description and the only option that allowed to read further was "Two-Factor Authentication ON"; "Learn more" and "Turn off Two-Factor Authentication". Sorry to keep bothering you, but am I missing something?

Gail,

i am confused also. I am only telling you what I went through. My records showed that my last back up on my iPod was well over a month ago, yet I had charged my iPod numerous times, so it should have backed up to the iCloud during those charge times. I checked iTunes and it backed up last week to my computer and not to the iCloud. I went to Settings on the iPod, selected iCloud, signed inwith my Apple ID, the iPod asked if this a trusted device, I said yes and the iPod came back with a confirmation number, which I inserted on the appropriate screen. I looked at my account settings and found no entry for the password. I inserted the password, which may have been incorrect because I fatfingered a digit, the next screen was requesting a Recovery code or key. Since I did not Hve a Recovery Code/key, I cancelled the recovery process. I did the same steps two more times with the same result until I used a stylus to input the password and after hitting NEXT, the next screen did not produce the Tecover Code/Key screen. hat was when I could manually back up the iPod to the iCloud and the password on the iCloud Account stayed populated.

After I informed you that I may have resolved my problem, you wrote back recommending I should get a new Recovery Code/key and you outlined the steps.

My iCloud Account states I am using Two-factor Authentication. If that does not require a Recovery Code/key,then I do not know why it appeared, but I do know it appeared twice and the cause of my issue was the password or lack of a password on the Account screen. So , I am not sure what I need now.
