Transitions too short for no good reason

I am using 10.3(.4) for the first time. Can't find a thing - it's taking ages!

But my main problem is adding transitions. The first time I tried, FCP would add the thinnest of clips - no way to grab handles without zooming way in, and then refuse to allow me to "stretch" them at all. Tried ^D, but made no difference to duration.

I restarted, deleting my prefs and now I get a transition of 1" that also cannot be stretched without a red warning coming up. The clip before is 15" and the clip after 3 minutes!!! There are plenty of frames to work with.

What's going on?

Thank you for your help on this. Seriously considering going back to 10.2 if possible.

Thanks Tom, but the transitions are really not behaving at all normally. There is seemingly plenty of available media before and after the cut. I can't extend it using the handles or ^D. If I up the duration, I can enter a number but the transition doesn't respond. At least they are now starting at 1". When I first tried (before rebooting), the transition marker was a mere sliver (duration SAID it was the default 2" but it was NOT - less than the blink of an eye long) and would not expand beyond the sliver.

I think something is wrong (with the update? the media?) but can't figure out what.

MAny things have changed in 10.3, but the transition behavior has not. The length of the shot used in the project next is irrelevant to how long the transition can be. The transition duration is limited by the available media BEYOND the edit point in the timeline.

This might explain the transition behavior and need for handles.

This is the problem. It won't let me drag in either direction! There is a 15" clip to the left and a 3' clip on the right and it goes all yellow in Precision Editor when I drag the end of the left clip as your arrow indicates. If I try to make the transition longer, in normal mode, it becomes red on the right and yellow on the left. I may not need it to be longer, but I would like to have the choice.

I can't change the duration using ^D either.

Okay, I see what you mean now. But that is not how FCP X used to work. You just had to add the transition to the edit point and it would take what it needed, as long as there were enough frames, from both sides. You could drag it to lengthen and it would keep gobbling up frames. Or you could set a duration and it would adapt accordingly.

Not looking forward to learning how FCPX works anew. I had just gotten the hang of it.

But thank you for your patience and help.
