Should I get the 13 inch or the 15 inch macbook pro?

I'm going to college, and so my family is planning to get me a new laptop. I'm torn between the 13 inch and the 15 inch. The smaller laptop is more portable, but the 15 inch has better performance.

I'm not really concerned about its weight, but I'm afraid the laptop will be too big in class and won't fit nicely in a college environment. I went to the apple store, and I really loved the screen size of the 15 inch, the 13 inch looked a bit too small. However, the 13 inch will be easier for me to carry around and use in class settings.

My uncle advised me not to get the 15inch laptop because it's overkill. I like to edit videos once in a while, I like to draw using Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, I like to create animations in Adobe Flash, but overall I don't do crazy video editing or rendering. However, I am a casual gamer. I like to play strategy games like civ 5, civ 6, and Hearts of Iron. I know I will have less time to game in college, but when I do, I want to enjoy the experience and so I'm afraid the 13 inch will not satisfy that criteria. My uncle said I should go for the 13 inch and buy a monitor for the extra screen size.

I have been debating for the past few hours and I really don't know what to chose.

I'd love to spend your money, but I have to agree with your Uncle. For the longest time when I used my 13" MBP Retina I wished I had the 15", but after plugging in a 24" Dell monitor, that wish went away!

Either way you go, you might want to consider the largest SSD drive you can afford and max out the RAM to 16GB which the 15", I believe, comes standard with.

For how long do you expect to use the laptop (barring accidents, losses & such)? Given that these are sealed systems that cannot be upgraded, expanded or such, you should consider what you will need at the end of its expected lifetime, where assignments, projects and such will impose bigger requirements.

If money is available, I'd go for the top-end 15" that comes maxed out with RAM. The speedier CPU and big SSDs are overkill, especially at Apple prices. But you will get twin GPUs that will provide excellent graphics performance and permit not only games but much faster results from high end graphics and animation programs.

I want my laptop to last all 4 years of college. I'm doing a Bio major, so I don't think I will have lots of time to game, to animate, or edit videos. This is why I'm unsure if getting the 15 inch is a good choice. I'm afraid it will be overkill. That being said, I'm scared that I will regret taking the 13 inch.

Portability isn't really a problem for me. I just don't want to spend more money for the 15 inch for horsepower I don't actually need. I'm sure though that the 15 inch laptop will still be very performant and sharp by 2021.
