Local Items keychain locks on sleep - cannot change settings

Setup: Mac OS 10.12.5 on 15" MacBook Pro Touchbar

Safari prompts to unlock the "Local Items" keychain. I find that it is indeed locked. I unlock it. After a sleep the "Local Items" keychain is locked again so Safari prompts to unlock it (again).

In Keychain Access, if I right-click the "Local Items" keychain the menus for Change Settings is grayed out. It is never active. I've already reset the password on the "Local Items" several times to match my login password. Interestingly, in Keychain Access if I unlock the "Local Items" keychain I can never lock it. The Lock Keychain menu is active but choosing it does nothing and the keychain remains unlocked. It locks again if I put the computer to sleep.

If the settings is the culprit, I'd like to change the "Local Items" keychain settings to not lock and not lock while sleeping (which is how the "login" keychain is configured).

Any tips / advice would be appreciated. Continually have to unlock the "Local Items" keychain is getting old.

Thanks,

Todd

As per this article : OS X El Capitan: Lock or unlock your keychain

  1. Open Keychain Access.
  2. If keychains are not visible in the left column, choose View > Show Keychains.
  3. Select a keychain in the Keychains list, then click the lock icon User uploaded file at the top of the window to lock or unlock the keychain. If a dialog asks you for a password, enter your keychain password.

You can display a keychain lock icon in the menu bar and use it to quickly lock or unlock your keychain. In Keychain Access, choose Keychain Access > Preferences. Click General, then click “Show keychain status in menu bar.”

As per this article : Keychain Access: login keychain

The login keychain is the default keychain for a user that is unlocked when he or she logs in. By default, the password to the login keychain is the same as the one used to log in to the computer.

System keychain is locked automatically by default , and when the computer comes out from sleep mode it will prompt to enter login name and password .And if you try to lock login keychain , keychain pop - ups will start .

Correct, I can unlock the keychain but the problem is that it locks again on computer sleep.

I have to go through all of the steps to unlock it (or enter the password when Safari prompts me).

I'd really like it to stay unlocked which is not happening.

I have two other MacBook Pros (different models) that do not exhibit this behavior. The local items keychain remains unlocked and I'm not prompted by Safari. The keychain also remains unlocked thru sleep cycles on these other two computers.
