VTS VOB / Old Home Movies

Hello,

A client came across old home movies from the 30's, 40's and so on and had them converted into digital format. She has asked me to pull the highlights together for a birthday celebration and sent me the files on a thumbdrive. The files are in a format I am unfamiliar with and cannot open. ie.: VTS_01_1.VOB

Any help you can give on opening these files so I can work with them in FCP would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks Karsten.

I ended up at the Apple Store this morning and, since I had numerous VTS files (70), they suggested using Compressor to convert the files as a batch to a format I can use in FCP. Since I couldn't bring my desktop with FCP in, they were'nt able to be specific as to how this is to be done. Do you know how to convert VTS files using compressor?

Try this instead: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/VisualHub.shtml

[I have recently tested this in Sierra and can confirm it is still working.]

Drag and drop your TS_VIDEO folders into the window. Set "To:" to MP4. Check H.264 Encoding and set the Quality to Go Nuts. If the originals are interlaced, you can click the Advanced tab and find and check Deinterlace (don't mess with anything else!! - As the Advanced dialog title says: "Don't do it! You'll screw it up!")

VisualHub has a very low learning curve compared to all the rest.

… frankly spoken ? They try to sell you another piece of software. which is very 'pro' = less intuitive to use; you have to learn to trigger batch-processes; you have to learn which of the hundreds of settings to use; yaddayadda… 😉

just 70 files? …

with the mouse select a dozen, then File/Export/480p; next.

When done, select the next 10…

Not the most brain-challenging work, but done in less than an hour…

… no extra costs, no extra tools, no extra extras…

meanwhile you can listen to a thrilling audiobook, learn from a podcast, do some ergonomic gymnastics, make plans for next week… 😉

Imho, 70 repetitions don' justify a complex program…

Imho!

The guy that wrote the software (Tyler Loch) really nailed it for ease of use (better than any other, even Apple's Compressor). Probably the reason it has lasted is because it is based on AppleScript and uses unix libraries (bundled and altered enough so as not to require installing FFmpeg) to encode/decode video. Hopefully, it will last as long as AppleScript. However, when it comes to dealing with Apple codecs, I stick with Quicktime 7 Pro (also much easier than Compressor, but not as easy as VisualHub).

Do you remember HyperEngine-AV?
