if i put a new sim card in disabled phone will it work

Old phone has been disabled due to forgetting password. Numbers been canceled. Now if I put my SIM card in will it work or do I need to take it in?

If the iPhone is disabled due to forgetting the password then a new sim will not change this.

You can try to restore it yourself by following the steps in this support document:

If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

Adding a new sim card with functional service will just restore the cell service to the iPhone but will do nothing to the forgotten password.

No, it will not work. The phone is disabled, that has nothing to do with the SIM or the number. To recover the phone you will need to restore it. See the instructions here, If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

Thanks. Just to be clear- ( I'm not at all familiar with this, sorry) - so I will take out the card that's in the phone and replace it with the card in the phone I'm currently using - and then follow the " Restore " instructions?

You can follow the restore instructions before inserting the new card if you want to. There is no requirement it be inserted before restoring.

Once the restore is complete, and you are setting up the iPhone you will be requested to place a sim card in the phone if one is not already there to complete activation.
