It's running on a 4 GB MacBook Air. It it not particularly demanding of either CPU or memory resources. I have a very specific purpose for using it and otherwise don't do much else with it, although Firefox runs quite well. Of course Linux is very efficient which helps.

I surmise the problem you are encountering is related to the VB guest you are using, not VB itself. Look into that.

Otherwise, if you are having any other trouble with your Mac, unrelated to using VB, it may point to a different cause.

VirtualBox is working perfectly well on all my Macs, including those with 4 GB RAM. It is not particularly resource-intensive, at least while running Ubuntu Linux.

Version 5.1.22 is the current release so be sure that is what you are using.

If you are having trouble with it, the reason is likely to be related to the virtual machine it is running. Contact Oracle VM VirtualBox for assistance.

Virtualbox is fine. You are trying to drive a car with four flat tires (4GB) on old hardware with a horribly slow Apple drive, using a new operating system with higher resource demands. As John Galt points out, a light-weight Virtualbox guest (e.g. Linux) with the right balance of guest memory, and cpu resource assignment — can be run in a 4GB RAM machine. In your case, you are exceeding your available memory, and swapping to secondary storage — which is much slower.

Regardless of the vendor, each successive release of an operating system incorporates added features that consume more resources than its predecessor. This progression also applies to security as well, where the most recent operating system gets more attention to security updates than its predecessor.

You have to pay to play, and if you want to run a virtual guest operating system with any hope of performance, especially if it is Windows — then you need to step up, and upgrade your RAM (e.g. 8GB), and put an SSD underneath the operating system.

Hello,

I tried the same vm on my Lenovo laptop with 2.6Ghz core i7 and 8GB ram running windoze. It is many times faster than my imac. The image I used is Ubuntu 64-bit.

It does look like something is horribly broken in mac os sierra. Or maybe someone can try running an X windows app within this iso, from mac and windows10 on same hw and see the difference.

If I had to revert to an older mac osx which works well on my 2009 imac with 4GB, what s the procedure? is there any KB for that?

thanks

FWIW, it's not surprising that a machine with twice the RAM and a much faster, hyper-threading CPU runs the same VM faster than your 8 year old Mac.

The problem is not Sierra.

I didn't use time machine as required by the link. I just upgraded from snow leopard to yesomite first and then to mac os sierra by getting the free OS disk image from App Store. You can see etra report above that there is no time machine configured.

I think yesomite was faster than sierra for me. So, can someone tell me downgrade path without losing any data from my mac. I can afford to start the process and not use system for a hours.
