the appearance of mail suddenly changed
MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
In your first screen shot , you are using classic layout .
Opened mail preferences , viewing checked the box for use classic layout , so to come out from classic mode uncheck the box of classic layout and drag , the second column towards left on your trackpad .
Take the cursor on the vertical line of second column so that cross hair will be created.
And what about the second screen shot , if it is jumbled up , delete the IMAP account and once again configure , all of your mails will start downloading ( make sure you must have great network speed ) .
Sorry, I'm not following. The second screenshot is the entire screen. I understand you are saying it looked like that entire screen with a sidebar on the left, but how would something that is an entire screen have more than one showing at a time? You stated that it would list the emails to the right. List them how?
Cheers,
GB
It appears that the preview pane is missing. Also the number of lines showing in the List Preview must be set to a 4 or 5 lines.
For the latter if this is acceptable then there is nothing that you will need to do. However, if you would prefer less lines, you can control this in Mail > Preferences... > Viewing > List Preview:
For the former item, you have two choices:
(Note: You will have to set up a few of the mail settings when doing these steps. This shouldn't require that you set up your individual email accounts, but if you use something like SpamSieve, you will need to reload its Apple Plug-in.)
Hi GB,
Thanks for your reply. My mail box has always looked like the individual email screen shot I sent -- the sender address, the subject, and a nicely formatted email with logos, signatures, etc. It suddenly changed to preview panes in which the words all run together, and you have to click on it to reply. I never had to do that before. I hope I'm explaining myself properly.
Jeff
The Folder list would be to the left, and the Inbox would have the number of new emails next to it. Clicking on the Inbox (or any other folder) would list the emails to the right, again all formatted like the second screen shot.
I'm not having trouble sending mail -- it's the appearance of the screen that suddenly changed. The list of emails for each folder were as sent by the senders -- now they are all jumbled with no formatting, unles I click on an individual one and it opens in a new screen (and that's the only way I'm able to reply).
It would just be below the one above it. So if I clicked on the Inbox, all the emails would appear to the right, and I would scroll down to whichever one I wanted to read. If you look at the first screen shot I sent you, it was just like that except each email was displayed formatted, not just a jumbled preview.
OK one more time -- you now what that individual email screenshot looked like? All the emails in a selected mailbox would appear like that in the pane to the right of the folder list. So instead of the preview pane I'd see the emails themselves. Now all I'm getting is a preview pane. It's driving me crazy.
Well, I've looked at all of the settings and views, and I am not seeing any way to not have a preview pane of some sort. There is no option to not display it. You can hide the mailboxes, but there is no option to hide the preview pane.
So, I'm at a loss as to how you had it set up before.
Sorry,
GB
I don't know either. I have never done anything to set it up the way I had it. Now the only way I can read emails is if I click on the one I want to read and it opens in a new window. Very frustrating and time consuming. Not sure why it suddenly started doing this. Thanks for trying!
The issue the OP is having is that she wants her view changed to only show the sidebar with the mailboxes, and the actual emails, with no preview pane anywhere. I don't think that there are any options that can be set that will result in this view.
The OP stated that that was the view she was using before. But again, I can find no settings that allow you to not display the preview pane at all....
