How do I connect a USB 3.0 to the USB 2.0 on this iMac mid-2011? Is there an adapter?

In my case, I have an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) Version 10.12.6. I am purchasing a G-Technnology 10TB G-DRIVE External Hard Drive (on the apply.com website) so that I can save some large medical files that I plan to save from a newer iMac. Would that drive work with my computer so that I can verify what I have copied?

Since you didn't say what the "device" is, it may or may not require the

USB3 speeds to function.

Generally, USB3 is backward compatible with USB2, but is not required.

If the device will work at the slower speed, just plug it in. If not, you can't.

How about an external hard drive? Such as:

Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB Portable External Hard Drive for Mac USB 3.0 (STDS1000100)

Plug it into the USB socket, 2 or 3, they are the same socket.

Just plug it in, USB 3 and USB 2 sockets are mechanically identical, no adaptor needed. Note that the drive speeds will be as they are for USB 2.
