I started a project and built a timeline where I edited various clips. I also exported a version of the movie I was making. My computer crashed and when I opened iMovies the finished movie was there but the timeline isn't so I can't make more edits. I don't want to start all over Sonos there anything I can do to access my prior work?

You didn't mention what version of iMovie you are using.
For iMovie 10.x.x there is a back up folder located at ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp/Data/Library/Caches/iMovie Backups. I don't know if it works for earlier versions.
