Icons Become Black Boxes in Finder

In the last several days for no apparent reason, icons in my Finder have changed from the black Apple in upper left (and other examples) to a black square. See screenshot. I am running 10.12.5. Anyone else have this problem or figure out a solution?

The problem went away in Safe Mode. I will run Drive Genius and see if there is a corruption problem somewhere.

That is unjustified. Drive "Genius" is likely to cause additional, unrelated problems including premature hard disk drive failure.

Do not exacerbate your existing troubles by installing even more garbage. If a problem does not occur in "Safe Mode" then read "If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode" in the above Support document. The other icons in your Mac's menu bar – the ones at the upper right of your screenshot – provide a clue.
