Pages EndNote Plug-in v3.0 breaks in-text citations

After upgrading to Pages 6.2 I was prompted to install the Pages EndNote Plug-in v3.0. Unfortunately, the new plug-in seems to break in-text citations in at least three ways:

(1) Instead of inserting an in-text citation as (LastnameA, LastnameB, and LastnameC, 2017), the format is now (LastnameA, FirstnameA; LastnameB, FirstnameB; LastnameC, FirstnameC 2017).

(2) When I change the output format in Pages’ Edit menu, the Bibliography changes as expected, but the in-text citations remain unaffected.

(3) Repeated citations are not abbreviated. For instance, (LastnameA, LastnameB, and LastnameC, 2017) should become (LastnameA et al., 2017) on repeated citations in one of my output styles. This does not happen. Instead even repeated citations remain at (LastnameA, LastnameB, and LastnameC, 2017).

It appears as if the Pages EndNote Plug-in v3.0 ignored the “Citations” section of the EndNote output styles.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I found a "solution":

  1. Find a version of Pages 6.1 or earlier somewhere (could be on your Backup drive, on a friend's Mac, or some shady website - that's where I found it)
  2. Rename your current Pages.app to something else, like PagesNEW.app
  3. Drag the "old" Pages 6.1 app you found to your Applications folder
  4. Download the 2.0 Plugin from here: Pages EndNote Plug-in v2.0
  5. Go to /Library/Application Support/ResearchSoft/EndNote/Plugins
  6. Find and delete the 3.0 Plugin, check if the 2.0 Plugin is there.
  7. Close Endnote
  8. Open Pages
  9. Open Endnote

This worked for me.

Hi Prof. Dr. Axel Buchner,

I understand that you’re having issues with the formatting of your citations using the EndNote plug-in for Pages. I’d like to provide you with a resource that I believe will be helpful in resolving your issue.

An update was recently released for the EndNote plug-in. Please use this link to download and install the latest version of the EndNote plug-in:

Download Pages EndNote Plug-in v3.1

Take care.

*update - if you do the whole document and have figures exporting back and forth Pages and Word doesn't work out, in this case:

  • in the original Pages document set every figure to 'Stay on Page'
  • then select all text and add to the clipboard
  • open a new Pages document and paste the text into this new document
  • delete all the figures from this new Pages document (makes the export and pasting quicker)
  • export the file to a Word document, open the file
  • go through the format referencing steps above
  • readjust the margins of the Word document to the margins the document Pages uses
  • select all text and add to clipboard
  • duplicate your original Pages document
  • select all the text in the duplicated Pages document and paste the text from the Word document

And you should have a document that looks like the EndNote plug in working :-P

I am not sure if this is mentioned, but I also noticed that multiple citations are now separated by a comma instead of a semi-colon and page numbers (citation range) are completely ignored. I tried re-installing Pages 6.2, and re-installing V2.0 of the plug-in, but it doesn't change anything. Changing the citation style definitely works for the bibliography, but is ignored in in-text citations. Does anyone know a way to completely un-install the plug-in?

I feel you Prof., the same thing just happened to me and I am in the midst of writing PhD thesis and a paper for publication. Imaging the dreadful feeling. Sadly it's a silly bug with no direct workarounds. Here's my simple solution, which worked but is annoying.

1. Backup any new files since the update

2. Time machine restore to your system immediately before the pages update (to version 6.1.1)

3. If necessary re-download endnote plugin v2.0

That should take you back to a functioning plugin..

If you don't have time machine then you'll have to find a .dmg for Pages 6.1

A short update...

I have tried reinstalling pages, reinstalling the plug-in, and reinstalling endnote. The issue is obviously one of the plug-in ignoring style guides for in-text citations.

I tried deleting and downgrading the plug-in (thanks for the file location Miluc–note that the library folder is the system library folder, not the user library folder). Deleting and downgrading allowed me to install v2.0 of the plug-in, but it is incompatible with Pages 6.2.

Solutions I can think of are:

1. delete the plug-in and downgrade Pages and the plug-in to the previous versions.

2. "hack" the system by excluding author, putting the author in manually with the "prefix" option in the "find endnote citation" dialogue box, and put page numbers in with "suffix". You need to put in a few extra spaces to get it done, but it works–except multiple authors are still separated by a comma not a semi-colon. If you are going to do all this extra work, it may make more sense to enter these manually and just click the option "only insert into the bibliography." Of course, then deleting your manual citation doesn't adjust your reference list.

Hopefully someone at the other end wakes up to the problem and is able to fix this soon. As I am days away from my dissertation proposal committee, I cannot wait.

I have the same problem. Before updating Pages, the only issue was citations with upperscript (Pages does not allow automatic upperscript, I had to do it manually)

Now, citations within the text can not be formatted in any style, and this is really annoying.

I tried support from Apple and from EndNote. Apple just said whether Pages is working, the problem is from the EndNote (Thompson Reuter) developers.

Here is the response of EndNote support:

"Thank you for your email. As said earlier, Apple has full control over the way the EndNote plug-in works in Pages and maintains the Cite While You Write functionality within Pages. The best we can do is to get in touch with Apple and discuss the matter."

We work with scientific writing and this lack of compatibility should be solved quickly ...

Thank you

So I have a found a slightly less cumbersome method of dealing with this issue as my thesis is due this week and I have 100+ reference dotted over 12,000 words and with the writing still going on; I don't have time for Apple or EndNote to get their finger out.

It requires Word (I'm using version 15.35), and obviously I'm using Pages 6.2 and EndNote 8.0.1. I selected the file in Pages, export it as a Word document and open it in Word, define the referencing format I want, click 'Update Citations & Bibliography' under bibliography in EndNote toolbar after which I select the text 'Convert to Plain Text' under tools and copy the text back into Pages.

Whilst this is clearly not an elegant solution and removes the links from the in-text citations, it's the only method I can think of that doesn't call for an individual edit of each in-text citation that I figured out and thought it could be of some use.
