Pen/stylus for my mac

I'm so sorry for my nick, all the other ones were taken.

I'm an artist and I'm looking for a good working pen/stylus for my iMac. I want to use it like a mouse (not like the iPen2, I don't want to draw directly on my screen). I would like it to be pressure sensible and work with the Adobe products. Any suggestions? I have searched the internet but found nothing so far.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.4)

feel free to post in your native language if it's easier for you.

The pen you are looking at appears to be more of a mouse, less of a percision tool for artists.

Drawing tablets are precision instruments for computer users who are fine artists, graphic designers, game developers, texture designers, etc. - they are also very commonly used with artists who work in applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter, GIMP, Affinity, etc.

Many of these programs are adaptable to features that a stylus+tablet solution allows to better simulate brush strokes and pressure, etc. Most if not all these products will work with Mac, Windows, Unix, etc.

An ipad is not a dedicated drawing tablet, it's a tablet based computer that you happen to be able to draw on - IMHO like a modern Etch-A-Sketch. I personally know of no serious designer that uses an iPad as their production system for graphic arts, but that does not mean there aren't any, I'm sure they are out there - but an iPad and iOS in general would present limitations for professional graphic artists that could be overcome by using what is more traditionally considered a laptop or desktop computer.

As for recommendation what's your budget and what software are you using and what type of work are you doing?

Really Jimmy??!!

You really shouldn't make blanket statements like this one.

I still consider myself a PROFESSIONAL designer/illustrator/painter, even though I only work as a part-time professional, now, due to nagging/chronic personal health issues, and I use my large, 12.9 iPad Pro as a visual drawing tablet at a fraction of the price of a 13 inch Wacom monitor tablet.

In additon I use this app with a third party smart, Bluetooth stylus and NOT with an Apple Pencil.

I use a drawing tablet app for iPad called Astropad.

Astropad Standard by Astro HQ

Astropad turns your iPad into a monitor drawing tablet. Works either over WiFi or via USB to a Mac.

I have been using this iOS App for over 18 months, now.

This app works great and allows me to either work remotely away from my iMac in another location in my apartment or right alongside my iMac.

This is a truly remarkable app that has been designed, from the ground up, to work as a visual drawing pen tablet.

So, here is one serious artist, who is an active volunteer in these forums, and uses an iPad to do serious art and design alongside a Mac, or not!

Your disclaimer aside, many artists DO REAL WORK on iPads!

Check out YouTube for artists using iPads and iPads w/Astropad for serious art, commercial art and design!

Thank You!

Wacom is the industry standard but not the only maker of tablets. Wacoms can integrate well with Adobe products.

And you cant draw on the screen of an iMac anyway, it's not a touch screen which is what the Apples Pencil is built for; iPad Pro. You need a stylus with a tablet to track the movement of the stylus.

I see one variation of this product that clams it works with OS 10.2 to 10.7 and then has some bad reviews about using it for fine art.

It appears to be more of an ergonomic mouse than a dedicated drawing/paining/CAD solution, possibly due to the fact the tablet allows a more granular tracking for better precision. I work with professional artists and was trained as one - no one I've worked with uses this solution, they use tablets, preferably Wacom but not exclusive.

Oh my. Do you always make people around you feel that they are stupid? 😊

On the other hand, I might be just that, but I do know what an iPad is though. I just ment it as an example. Enough of that.

I think I have found my product thanks to you, I guess I'll go for one of the Wacom Intuos Art tablets.

Thank you for your kind help!

With regards,

Inger 🙂

I commend you for knowing more than one language but that does not mean I you use English fluently enough where you think your point is being made clearly. I've gone to England an not understood a word of it and I grew up the US, we are vehement with English if you haven't noticed.

My advice to you was post in your native language so we could better understand what you were asking and you could do so clearly, but again, as an American I don't feel a necessity to apologize to anyone.😝

We invented rocket ships, beer and the German Sheppard; so deal with it!

A Note,

If you're considering the use of Astropad on your iPad Air, be advised that you can only use the $30 "Standard Edition" of Astropad and works with all iPads and third party stylii with OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks and later Mac OSes.

Astropad Pro is an iPad Pro/Apple Pencil ONLY, monthly subscription version geared toward more professional, commercial artists that needs OS X 10.10 or later Mac OS.

The stylus and app are more expenive than a Wacom Tablet?

Really?

What Wacom Tablet were you looking at to purchase?

The Bamboo series drawing tablets?

Even the small Wacom Intuos drawing tablets only have an effective drawing area of 3 inches by 6 inches.

These are expensive for the actual physical area you can draw within on these drawing tablets.

These have a very small physical drawing area to work in and you don't work your iPad and iMac's screen together while you draw.

Your 9.7 inch screen iPad has a much more effective drawing area (nearly 6 inches by 7-3/4 inches).

what part of "I personally" or "but that does not mean there aren't any, I'm sure they are out there" escaped you?

Are you stating 'How dare I have my own experience with many years of supporting hundreds of professional graphic artists for corporations and being a freelance one myself for even longer but failing to check you-tube so I could befriend someone who claimed to use a stylus on an iPad to rectify what I clearly indicated was a trend in the scope of my own profession but could be possible elsewhere?' Really? Thats what you do here?
