Press [ENTER] twice in Safari on Sierra

Okay, this issue/glitch has been going on for quite some time now.

The problem I am having is the following: Every time I want to do a search, i.e. google for "the first Mac," I must press enter twice to do the search. The first press highlights my search, and the second does the search.

The glitch only happens when I search for something, not when I go directly to a website URL. Recently, I have switched from Google to DuckDuckGo, simply for the privacy aspect, but also to check if this was the issue. It was not. I still have the problem.

Any suggestions, helpful tips, or comments are much appreciated. Thanks!

Try playing with the settings in Safari, Preferences, Search. Look for the ones under Smart Search Field and the "Include search engine suggestions."

Often what happens is your Internet connection has trouble reaching the servers that provide these functions. The delay could only be a few seconds, but that is enough for the search field to "wait" for the response and thus ignore your first Return. I turned off "Include search engine suggestions" when I had this problem and it worked. I turned it back on some weeks later and it seemed to work OK again as the latency issue was probably temporary.

Also, I have hear that some people have cleared this up with a NVRAM reset. So try that if the first suggestion doesn't work. How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

You are welcome. At the present time, you don't really need an anti-virus program when using a Mac. The OS does a good job taking care of itself. If you still want one, the one below was the least invasive of the ones I have tested.

ClamXav

Try these troubleshooting steps.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Unfortunately, I'm out of ideas. The only other suggestion might be a bit drastic, but it would be to do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

Thank you for the help.

Unfortunately, neither of the two suggestions seemed to help. I tried both, in the proper order, as well as, switching back to Google after the reboot; but it is still not working.

I see how the latency issue might be the cause. Currently, I am getting about 5mbps down on speedtest.net, but that still should be fast enough for basic searches.

Okay, I did both of the steps you suggested but it's still the same way it was.

Do you possibly have any more ideas? This search thing is really annoying.

Also, I know in the entire security community everybody has their own idea of which piece of software is best, and it can get overwhelming. But now that I removed Avast, do you recommend a replacement?

Thanks for all your help so far!
