I am trying to use an external microphone hooked up to the 1/4 " jack on my 2016 MacBook Pro 15" model. The computer does not even recognize that an external microphone is hooked up. Any ideas?

Apparently, using the headphone jack as an input for external audio is no longer supported on new MacBook Pros.
But it is supported for the Apple headphones with mic! So surely there must be a way to get the MacBook to recognise a mic with TRRS as such, not as a headphone?
