iMac screen replacement

I have an older 27 inch iMac, late 2009, and the screen is shattered. What is the best most cost effective way to deal with this? Does Apple repair/replace screens in Apple Stores? I live in Australia.

You can try prying the glass away from the iMac by using something that may have a suction cup on it to pull the oanel away from the magnets or use strong adhesive tape or duct tape and make two tape loops that you can stick to the upper portion of iMac glass panel and pull on tape loops until the screen starts pulling away from the magnets, grab the panel with one hand, then grab the panel with the other hand an pull a little more until all the magnets let go on the sides.

Then, you lift up on the bottom of the glass to free it from the bottom of the iMac.

See this YouTube video here.

Replacements can be found on eBay.

As an aside note,

I run my iMac without the glass, but I purchased one of the metal frames so I wouldn't have to look at the magnets all the time.

It's just a hollow metal frame that hides all the iMac's frame magnets ( this attaches magnetically since it's made of metal) and makes your iMac look "normal' again sans the extra glass layer.

The advantages of this are there is noticeably less glare because you eliminated a layer of glass and eliminated the slight air space between the glass panel and the lcd.

Your iMac will run cooler because additional heat can now escape more easily from the front of the iMac.

The major disadvantage is that by not replacing the protective glass screen, you leave the actual LCD screen vulnerable to future damage.

I prefer a cooler running computer.

So, I took the risk and left the glass panel off,

Been running my iMac this way for the last 7 years with no mishaps.

The LCD screen is hard, so, you can clean it with a clean very damp dry microfiber cloth.

The decision to purchase and replace this protective glass panel is, of course, your decision.

I just wanted to give you this other option for consideration.

Good Luck to You!

There is none. Apple will no longer repair them because they are obsolete. The screen was made by LG and is very hard to find. It's doubtful there will be any in parts inventories but if you find the proper part expect that it will be expensive. Cheap replacements from Chinese/Korean sellers is possible but risky. The Apple part is around $600 while the LG knockoff may be $300.

I'd toss it if you live in Australia unless you find someone selling a 2009 iMac with a good screen that isn't working otherwise.

Is it the actual LCD screen or just the front glass panel protecting the screen that is shattered?

If it is just the glass panel, that can be lifted off (it is just held on with strong magnets) and possible replacements for that glass panel might be able to be found and purchased from Mac resellers or on eBay.

BTW,

You can still use the iMac with this glass panel off, IF no damage to the actual LCD screen.
