15" Macbook Pro 2016 5k display flickers when the system is under load

I have a 2016 15" MacBook Pro (touch bar) that has an LG 5k Ultrafine display attached to it.

When I place it under a high graphics load (video game) sometimes the 5k display will flash for a couple of seconds. This appears to be a temperature issue. I downloaded one of the fan control packages and adjusted the fans to run at high speed while I was playing the game and the frequency of the flickers was reduced drastically. Today was a hot day (no AC in the house). When I played the game, even with the fans turned up the display started flickering almost immediately.

By flashing I mean there are random, quadrant sized blocks of horizontal and vertical lines that flash on the display.

This is the only time I am experiencing this problem.

Has anyone else experienced it?
