I have a Sharp Aquos Smart tv
I don't understand the Apple tv ? I have a Sharp Aquos Smart tv, that is several years old, but still connected to wireless, so if I purchased the Apple TV unit, would it play on my tv?

What don't you understand about it? The Apple Tv is a device you connect to your TV.
As long as your TV has an HDMI port, and supports at least 720p yes it should work. The TV being Smart has no bearing on the Apple Tv.
