Serial number 'not valid'

I am trying to enter my serial number to get some online support and it comes up as 'not valid'. Have cross checked the one under About This Mac and the one on the casing of the machine and they are both the same. Obviously have also checked and double checked I am entering it right. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.
