Ethernet card damaged during cable modem setup?

While setting up a new cable modem (Netgear CM1000) with an Ethernet cable, my Ethernet card died. Could be a coincidence but thought I'd post in case it happened/s to somebody else. There was no lightning in the area. Comcast cable, by the way.

I knew something didn't sound right. You're going to have a hard time replacing a board that doesn't exist. The 2013 15" Retina MacBook Pro doesn't have an Ethernet card, which is why it doesn't show up:

You need a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter. If that isn't working, then you need a new adapter.

Also, just curious, what did you try plugging an Ethernet cable into?
