Yes, that's correct. There is no iMessage app for Android. However, it should have been sent as MMS automatically if both you and the recipient have MMS provisioned on your accounts. Unless your recipient had an iPhone at one time and never deregistered it. If that is the case they can use this link: Deregister and Turn Off iMessage - Apple Support
How do I enable iMessage on my iPhone 7 Plus? I was using my message app to send five photos and that's the message that came up for me.

Thanks Lawrence. I went to Settings/Message to see that iMessage was toggled ON. My Apple ID was not displayed but I don't see where it would be. I toggled it OFF and then back ON
again. No joy so far.
In further investigation I think I've learned why. iMessage can only been sent to an Apple device. I was sending photos to an Android. Am I right?

Settings/Messages. Log it if your Apple ID isn't displayed. Turn on iMessage.
