Preview app and black & white TIFF files

I've been scanning black & white pics and negatives using Image Capture and an Epson scanner. The scanning process works fine. As soon as I open up the TIFF file in the Preview app the file becomes corrupted, changing the picture and thumbnail to an all black picture. As long as I keep the file open in Preview, I can make adjustments to the picture but must Export as a JPEG to get a picture other than the corrupted all-black TIFF file. It has no problem with color TIFF files, only black & white TIFF files. Using El Capitan and the version of Preview that comes with that OS.

But even a Black&White image should have a color sync profile. Have you checked in Preview?

If you open the Inspector in Preview from the Tools menu, Tools > Show Inspector, the first tab with the general Info should be showing the profile at the bottom of the panel.

You can try to assign a different profile from the Tools menu.

There is no color profile for the scanned image. It is a black & white, or greyscale, tiff image.

Of course there is a color profile - it could be black and while or grayscale or sRGB or CYML or Adobe RGB or many others - but there is a color profile - and that is probably the problem which is why we need to know what it is
