What is photo booth

I have the Photo Booth App on my iPad Air 2. I can't figure out why I would use it. It doesn't wiggle with an 'x', so I can delete it, so I assume it's an Apple app, but it appears to be fairly useless unless I want to turn a photo into a kaleidoscope or distort it somehow??? Does anyone know what its purpose is?
