My iphone 6 successfully pairs by bluetooth to my 2011 Subaru Outback, but only for phone use, not for music (or other apps). I get the message "Portable player could not be connected". Any ideas?

It could be an error on your stereos part. Try googling any manufacture errors for the stereo, and how to fully connect to the phone. I had this problem with my cars stereo also and it turned out to be the stereo
Possibly BUT my brother's iphone 6 IS able to connect to my car, for both phone AND music. So I think there must be something off about my specific phone's bluetooth, that prevents the music connection while the phone connection works.
