My iPod is broken - And I haven't even used it yet.

I got an iPod nano for Christmas. I have sucessfully downloaded music onto it.
I go to turn it on this morning, and apparently it is broken.
The screen when bright white, and so I tried to turn the center-wheel. I could hear it clicking as it turned in my headphones, but the screen was still white. Then everything went black, and has refused to work ever since.
Switching the Hold switch does not turn it on.
When I plug it to my computer, my computer freezes. It says Msgsrv32 [ not responding ]
When I tried to plug it into my sister's computer, it did not recognize my iPod as anything, and then proceeded to freeze her computer.
What is wrong with my iPod, and how do I get it to work?

standard warranty is one year from date of purchase

repaired units are covered by the remainder of the original one year warranty or ninety days from repair, whichever ends later

it's been about 5 years since i sent one back for repair, turnaround was 4-5 days, bear in mind i'm in the uk and times may differ for other countries

apple answers these questions and more here...

It usually takes about a week to have the replacement in your hand from when you first request the repair here -> http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/

do they come with automatic 30-day warranties?
Sadly no.
Happily, all iPods come with a one year warranty (including replacements, from the original purchase date)
After 6 months and up to one year, you pay $29.95 for shipping.
