Your system has run out of application memory

I'm getting this message when trying to add sharpening to 4k video across a project that's just over a minute in length. I was working on proxy media, then I switched to optimised media and sharpened one clip. I then copied and pasted just the sharpening attribute to the rest of the clips in my timeline. After about 5 minutes I get the "Your system has run out of application memory" error message despite my system having 64GB of RAM and hardly anything running in the background. I tried again, this time with activity monitor running, and watched the RAM usage by FCPX rise steadily until it maxed out my 64GB. I'm running Sierra on a Mid-2010 Mac Pro, 2 x 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4095 MB card. Can someone tell me why I'm having this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Mac Pro, 2x3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon, 64GB

Hi Luis. My system drive is a 250GB Sandisk SSD. At the moment it has 40GB of available space on it.

However, this is how I have my storage configured for the library I'm using in FCPX:

Media: USB 3 4TB external drive with 3.14TB of available space

Motion Content: In Motion Templates Folder (system drive)

Cache: 500GB internal SSD drive with 236GB of available space

Backups: USB 3 4TB external drive with 3.14TB of available space

The Library itself is on another USB 3 4TB external drive with 3.99TB of available space.

Another point perhaps worth mentioning is that when FCPX finishes a rendering task it doesn't appear to free up memory, it just keeps topping up the amount it uses with each additional task. I have to actually close and restart FCPX to get it to release memory.

Do you want me to paste the whole of the report, or just a section of it (it's quite long)

Thanks for your help!

Oh!, and as look more into the report, I have to disagree with Tom...

It does not look very good.

You have installed a lot of ****.

You should thoroughly uninstall sophos and cleanmymac.

Also I see the name intego in there.

Antivirus on the mac kill performance and cause all sorts of trouble.

cleanmymac is known to delete stuff that shouldn't and in some cases render systems unstable or inoperable.

I don't care for littlesnitch either, but that is another matter.

You should also consider if you really need a dozen or so login items. These are applications that start every time you log in, and even if you don't use them will be there using system resources.

You have lots of things installed over the years. I would consider doing a full backup of your system drive and a clean install of Sierra, followed by migration of your user account but NOT applications and settings; then only install the stuff that is really useful.

Yes, and it didn't find any faults. Btw, there were red items in the EtreCheck report, they just didn't show as red when I exported the data for some reason.

Can someone confirm for me if it's normal behaviour for FCPX to just keeping grabbing large chunks of memory when rendering until it maxes the memory out, then not to free up that memory once it's finished rendering? This looks very much like an app issue to me, or a configuration one.

Jun 23, 2017 1:04 PM in response to Tom Wolsky

There are no stills at all Tom. I did all of my editing on proxy files then switched to optimised for sharpening and noise reduction. That's when the issues started. I've lost count over how many times FCPX has stopped responding because of this, forcing app closure. The behaviour looks like a memory leak, either caused by the app itself or a plugin. I just don't know how to troubleshoot it from here.
