Why can't I play movies via HDMI cable?

when I hook my iPhone to my tv via HDMI cable, not the apple ine, I get an error message that says device can not play protected movies and has no sound on other apps. What am I doing wrong? I've followed all steps I've found on YouTube! TIA

iPhone 5s, iOS 10.3.2

I was able to find it at Amazon.com and based on the reviews it has, yes, it appears it does not work correctly for those that have bought it.

Get one from a better known company or directly from Apple to assure compatibility and functionality.

There's a reason they are very cheap.

Which one exactly then? Does it say its HDCP compliant?

The lightning to hdmi adapter you use must be able to maintain the DRM protection of the media you want to play, otherwise it will not work. The adapter must be an HDCP compliant one. A cheap version may not be able to transmit the protected movies correctly.
