Depending on the software version (of watchOS) that has been installed on a new Apple Watch prior to it being shipped, a newer version may be available when first setting it up.
If so, watchOS will be updated automatically as part of the pairing and setup process.
Before pairing Apple Watch, ensure that your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS.
